I grew up in a large family. I have four brothers andsisters.

When I was young, my mother spent an hour everymorning preparing lunches for all of us to take toschool.

My lunch was almost the same every day: an eggsandwich, some chips, a banana and a cookie.

The problem was that I never liked eggs. I used to throw the sandwich.

Then I would have trouble listening carefully in class because I was hungry.

I never told my mother about this because I didn't want to make more work for her.

But one day, when I was about ten, I had an idea.

That evening I told my mother, "You know, I don't really like eggs. Can I make my ownsandwich from now on?"

My mother answered, "Of course. You can make your own sandwich and you can also help memake all the other sandwiches."

From this experience I learned that if you really want something, it's OK to ask for it.

But if you volunteer to do something, you should also be prepared to do more work than youexpected!
