A seven-day travel rush across China has come to an end, as the National Day holiday, also known as "Golden Week" concluded.

According to the Ministry of Transport, during the past week, road trips reached 630 million nationwide, a 4.6 percent growth compared to last year, and waterway trips surpassed 14 million, up 3.1 percent. The national railway system mobilized temporary trains to cope with the traffic peak. The railways carried about 68 million passengers, a decrease of three percent compared to last year.

Meanwhile, a total of 8.15 million trips were made by plane in the past seven days, according to the Civil Aviation Administration. This was a 5.7 percent increase from last year.

Retailers and the catering industry also saw a boost in holiday spending. Consumers spent 975 billion yuan, or nearly 160 billion US dollars, during the holiday, 12 percent more than during last year’s holiday.

Roads and railways across China are creaking under the traffic load as millions of people return home from a week-long National Day holiday.

Heavy fog made things worse in northern China, forcing parts of expressways to close on Tuesday morning. When the expressways reopened in regions including Beijing, Hebei and Shandong, it was to record traffic.

The Highway Monitoring and Response Center says large and medium-sized cities across the country saw a dramatic increase in traffic flow starting at noon. And it's set to continue until Wednesday night, when National Day holiday ends.

Meanwhile, railway authorities predict about 11 million passenger trips will be made today. Over 370 trains will be added to ease the traffic load.

More than 8 million train trips are expected to be made on Thursday, the final day of the week-long Spring Festival holiday, as millions return to work from family reunions, according to the China Railway Corporation (CRC) on Thursday.

The Lunar New Year holiday, the most important traditional holiday in China, comes to an end on Thursday and tens of millions of people will return to work from their hometowns.

The CRC said it would operate 768 extra trains on Thursday to cope with the travel peak after 7.97 million train trips were made on Wednesday, about 656,000 more than the previous year.

The travel rush coincides with snowstorms which have swept through central and eastern regions for two days and disrupted traffic in some regions, including Henan, Hubei, Anhui and Jiangsu provinces.

The National Meteorological Center on Thursday issued a yellow alert for blizzards, the second-highest alert in the country's four-grade disaster warning system.

To ensure safety, the CRC has lowered the speed limits for some sections of high-speed railway from more than 300 km per hour to 200. These include rails operating between Zhengzhou and Xi'an, Xi'an and Baoji, Baoding and Dezhou, and Dingzhou and Wuhan.

China's transport system is often put to the test during Chunyun, which literally means Spring Festival transport, the 40-day travel period around the Spring Festival.

About 3.62 billion trips are expected to be made via all modes of transportation during the 40-day period, which started in mid-January, according to official data.

It's hard to avoid traveling over the holidays but the experience I had last week really takes the cake.

I flew back to Tucson, Arizona, to be with my wife's family, as we do every Christmas. I got to the airport an hour and a half before my flight, which I thought would be plenty of time. When I got there, though, I saw that the security line was out the door. Because it was the holidays, people were traveling with a lot of extra packages. It took twice as long as it normally would to get to the front of the line. When I finally got to the gate, I found out that my flight had been oversold. The gate agent was looking for people to voluntarily give up their seats for a later flight in exchange for a $100 travel voucher. If she didn't get enough volunteers, she would have to bump people from the flight. Luckily, several people took her up on the offer and the rest of us boarded.

What a hassle! I love the holidays but I don't love holiday travel.

It’s Lunar New Year, the “year of the horse.” Of course, horse is not how millions of Chinese are currently traveling, as they return home from the growing cities where they are trying to better their lives.

Within the last five years, China has built a network of high-speed rail that covers most of the main routes between cities. But that’s not how most Chinese people are getting home, it’s too expensive. Cheaper, slower, dirtier trains are more popular, but don’t go everywhere people want to be.

No, buses carry the bulk of the travelers back home and will return them to the cities when the holiday season ends. But buses are not the only vehicle plying the ever more crowded roads. With increased wealth has come a growing love affair with the car. China is now home to 120 million private cars, up from just 15 million at the turn of the century.

That’s bad news for air quality. As one city environmental official told me when I recently visited, no matter how much he curbs pollution from industry, smog continues to suffocate because of more and more cars.

Should China eventually approach the number of cars per capita in the U.S., they’d see more than a billion vehicles on their roads. The smog may stop them from seeing much else.

For most people, they will choose to travelduring holiday because they want to relieve themselves from the high pressureof work. However, it happens quite often that people often ran into trafficjams on the way to travel. Some people think that we can relax ourselves bytraveling no matter of how many people there. Some people would rather to stayin home than going out to travel because they think there are too many people swarminto the scenic spots. In my point of view, I would rather to stay indoorsrather than going out to travel. Reasons are listed below.

Firstly, during holiday, so many peopleswarm into the travel spots that we can’t enjoy ourselves to the full. For mostpeople, they want to travel because during holiday, they can have several days torelieve themselves by traveling. However, so many people crowd together willmake their tour lose the original fun.

Secondly, during holiday, price will berising drastically. It is known to all that you need to spend much more to buythings or taking bus or any other transportation since many retailers will raisegoods’ price during this holiday to get fat profits.

第二,在假期期間,物價會大幅上漲。眾所周知,你需要支付更多的錢來買東西或坐車或者乘坐其他的交通工具,因為很多的商家會在此期間通過抬高物價來獲取豐厚的利潤。

All in all, travel during holiday is not agood choice for us since its inconvenience in traveling among a huge crowd ofpeople and also the dramatically high price for goods and transportations willlet us pay extra money.

總之, 在假期旅遊並不是一個好的選擇。不僅是因為在旅遊的時候穿梭於人群中會很不方便,而且也因為假期期間的物價及交通費用會飛漲而讓我們多支付額外費用。

The May Day Holiday is one of the peak travel seasons in China, and trains and the highways have taken most of the strain.

On the first day of the holiday, there were about eleven million passengers passing through railway stations nationwide. Altogether three hundred and eight-five additional trains have been added to deal with the travel peak. Tourist trips accounted for the majority of the journeys.

Tourist cities connected with high speed railways, including Beijing, Guilin, Hangzhou, and Xiamen, are expecting more passengers to come over the next two days.
