張擇端(1085年—1145年)，字正道。漢族，琅邪東武(今山東諸城)人。北宋著名畫家。他的風俗畫《清明上河圖》，繫世界名畫之一，也是他的代表作，描繪當年汴京近郊在清明時節社會各階層的生活景象，真實生動，是一件具有重要歷史價值和傑出藝術成就的優秀風俗畫。經過近千年的漫長歲月，至今仍完好地儲存在北京故宮博物院。
張擇端他自幼好學，早年遊學汴京(今河南開封)，後習繪畫。宋徽宗時供職翰林圖畫院，專工界畫宮室，尤擅繪舟車、市肆、橋樑、街道、城郭。後“以失位家居，賣畫為生，寫有《西湖爭標圖》、《清明上河圖》”。他是北宋末年傑出的現實主義畫家，其作品大都失傳，存世《清明上河圖》、《金明池爭標圖》，為我國古代的藝術珍品。這兩件作品現存北京故宮博物院。另外，天津藝術博物館藏有署名“張擇端”的小幅《西湖爭標圖》，系委託之作，該作品現在已經轉到天津博物館。《清明上河圖》尚存，是《東京夢華錄》、《聖畿賦》、《汴都賦》等著作的最佳圖解，具有極大的考史價值，不只繼承發展了久已經失傳的中國古代風俗畫，尤其繼承了北宋前期歷史風俗畫的優良傳統。
清明上河圖》 [1]本是進獻給宋徽宗的貢品，流傳至今已有800多年的歷史。其主題主要是描寫北宋都城東京市民的生活狀況和汴河上店鋪林立、市民熙來攘往的熱鬧場面，描繪了運載東南糧米財貨的漕船通過汴河橋涵緊張繁忙的景象。作品氣勢恢弘，長528.7釐米、寬24.8釐米，畫有587個不同身份的人物，個個形神兼備，並畫有13種動物、9種植物，其態無不惟妙惟肖，各種牲畜共56匹，不同車轎二十餘輛，大小船隻二十餘艘。這件現實主義的傑作，是研究北宋東，京城市經濟及社會生活的寶貴歷史資料。《金明池爭標圖》描繪的是皇帝帶領近臣到金明池觀水戰、賽龍舟的熱鬧場面，圖長28.6釐米、寬28.5釐米，略呈正方形。小小的畫面，把周圍9裡多的池面及池岸邊的景物悉數摹畫下來。著重描寫池中的大龍舟及周圍的小船，用動靜結合的手法，概括地繪出了金明池的全部景色和皇帝觀看爭標的場面，畫面緊湊，結構嚴謹，主題突出。
北宋著名畫家張擇端的長卷風俗畫《清明上河圖》，是我國繪畫史上的稀世奇珍，畫之瑰寶。它用現實主義手法，全景式構圖， 生動細緻地描繪了北宋王都開封汴京時的舟船往復，飛虹臥波，店鋪林立，人煙稠密的繁華景象和豐富的社會生活習俗風情。全圖規模巨集大，結構嚴密，構圖起伏有序，其筆墨技巧，兼工帶寫，活潑簡練，人物生動傳神， 牲畜形態，房舍、舟車、城郭、橋樑，樹木、河流、無一不至臻至妙，稱得上妙筆神工。綜數我國古代繪畫，多有那種士大夫的孤芳自賞，實難找到類似“清明上河圖”這樣不惜以大量的筆墨，描繪數以百計的民眾市俗生活與商業經濟活動，將民眾置於主人翁地位，並加以正確地藝術概括，這在中國古代繪畫中是不多見的，就是在現代繪畫中也是罕見的。此畫的第一位收藏人是宋徽宗，是他用瘦金體親筆在畫上題寫了“清明上河圖”五個字。
